The need for VTEC to hire-in HST power cars and sets continued throughout the period under review. On Tuesday, July 7 it hired in a Crosscountry HST set with power cars Nos. 43384 and 43303 for 1Y03 04.45 Newcastle-King's Cross service. On the same day, the 07.00 Hull-King's Cross was observed passing Gilberdyke with power cars Nos. 43048 (on hire from East Midlands Trains) and 43290. The next day produced Nos. 43300 and 43073 (also on hire from EMT).
