Full electrification of the North Downs Line between Reading and Gatwick Airport by 2019 has been called for by Surrey County Council (SCC). Speaking in front of Transport Minister Patrick McLoughlin at the Great Western Railway Conference in London, the council's cabinet member for Environment & Planning, Mike Goodman, said that electrification of the 29-mile line would help generate around 8,000 jobs and close to £1.9billion for the region's economy; a fact supported by research provided by four local enterprise partnerships.
