An Alliance formed of Atkins, Laing O'Rourke and VolkerRail has been awarded the Network Rail contract to design and deliver East West Rail Phase 2. The scheme will involve the upgrading and reconstruction of little used and mothballed sections of the network, linking the Great Western, Chiltern, West Coast and Midland main lines, to join up Oxford to Bedford and Milton Keynes via Bletchley, and Milton Keynes to London Marylebone via Aylesbury. Already the alliance is developing the outline plan and construction programme for the project, which when completed will enable consultation to proceed with the Department for Transport to hopefully agree the final designs, construction timetable and costs for the project. If all goes to plan, the alliance aims to submit a Transport & Works Act order application next autumn.
