Are we worried about the age of our passenger rolling stock? The ORR's Annual Statistical Release 2015/16 stated that 'the average age of rolling stock nationally at the end of 2015/16 was 21 years, a 0.8-year increase over the past year'. This increase in the age of our trains received a lot of national coverage, but is it really a problem? Most trains are built to last perhaps 40 years, and some go on for longer. They need regular maintenance and refurbishment, but do we really mind about actual age?
