BOMBARDIER has been selected to build a monorail for two lines in Egypt after the Government approved a £1.7bn export finance guarantee. It is the largest amount of financing UK Export Finance (UKEF) has ever provided for an overseas infrastructure project. The 70 four-car Innovia Monorail 300 trainsets for the monorail system will be built at Derby's Litchurch Lane factory, directly supporting 100 UKjobs at the company and many more in the supply chain. Bombardier's consortium was named preferred bidder for the project at the 2020 UK-Africa Investment Summit and, with UKEF's guarantee, has secured the financing needed to fulfil the contract and start production. Bombardier can now invest in its manufacturing centre in Derby where the trains for the Egyptian monorails will be designed and built. This is the first major UK export since Derby won the contract in 2008 to supply both new trains and kits of parts to be built locally for South Africa'a Gautrain project, the units based on the Electrostar. Specialist loco manufacturers have won smaller orders. The deal was announced just before the Alstom takeover of Bombardier took place on January 29.
