摘要

BROKEN rail fastenings have been identified as the cause of January 28's freight train derailment at Eastleigh, which caused six days of disruption to services on the South Western Main Line. Network Rail's investigation found the failure of the fastenings on a set of points caused the track to spread under the weight of a slow-moving intermodal train. A Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) preliminary examination found some of the rail fastenings were already broken before the derailment. NR says this type of fastening is only used in a limited number of locations and no others were found to be faulty during emergency inspections across the Wessex route.
