THE Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway's (Ff&WHR) Cockerill-built NG/G16 Garratt No. 87 will begin its second spell in service during March. It was withdrawn for overhaul at the end of October 2018. Work undertaken at Dinas includes fitting a new ash pan (with drenches to prevent lineside fires), an enlarged vacuum brake cylinder (the loco now has all vacuum brakes rather than the previous steam-vacuum mix), a new smokebox (with an improved spark arrester), a strengthened boiler cradle, and a new cab floor.
