ALSTOM confirmed on February 17 it was in discussions to buy the rail engineering business of competitor Bombardier and had signed a memorandum of understanding. The value of Bombardier is said to be between €5.8billion and €6.2bn. After the failure of the planned Siemens/Alstom merger, blocked by the EU Commission in February 2019, it seems unlikely an Alstom Bombardier merger would be any more welcome to regulators in Europe, where the majority of both companies' business is conducted.
