Alstom and Bombardier: A new rail industry giant emerges

Just over a year after the first media reports of talks between the two companies, Alstom became the owner of Bombardier Transportation on 29 January. Alstom paid around €4.4 billion for Bombardier and the combined company, with a turnover of €15.7 billion (€15.6 billion in 2019) and existing orders worth over €71 billion in 2020, is now the largest rail engineering company in Europe, with second-placed Siemens Mobility significantly smaller at €9 billion. Before the Bombardier acquisition Alstom was slightly smaller than Siemens and nearly merged with Siemens in a planned 2019 deal to create "Siemens-Alstom", which would have been controlled by the German company. However, this was blocked by the European Commission on competition grounds.
