I AM grateful to The RM for putting me right after 52 years of being misinformed. I had always believed the 'Never' in Neverers was a reference to never paying fares. As someone on the periphery of the Yorkshire Lodge of the quasi-Masonic Society, I can now rest easily knowing that stories of platform ticket misuse and locking of vestibule doors between the first and second coach of steam workings to mislead the guard were purely apocryphal. Presumably, stories of stopping trains with detonators to get a master-shot on restarting exemplified similar exaggerations.
