Following the NII SEPA audit in 1998, UKAEA at Dounreay developed an integrated decommissioning and waste management plan. This set out all the tasks necessary to decommission and restore the site. This programme covered decommissioning all the facilities, treating all the wastes including the residual fuel, which had been left as a result of the fast reactor development programme. It also showed that new plants and infrastructure were needed to allow all aspects of this work to be completed. After discussion with the funding arm of Government and the regulators, a programme of between 50 and 60 years was agreed with all the major hazards removed in the first 25 years.
