The future of Dounreay-challenges and opportunities

Between 1958 and 1994, Dounreay was very successful in the research and development of fast reactor technol- ogy-demonstrating the principles and industrialization of the fast reactor with the Dounreay fast reactor (DFR) and the prototype fast reactor (PFR), and also completing the nuclear fuel cycle with plutonium bred in the PFR being returned to the reactor as new fuel. The task now, for Dounreay, is the environmental restoration of the site.
