Interest in, and funding for, what are commonly called 'advanced hullforms' has reached a high level in recent years, culminating in the US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme, one example of which uses a high-speed semi-planing monohull developed by a team led by Lockheed Martin, the other a slender, stabilised trimaran design produced by a team led by General Dynamics.
