A system for laying pipes in water comprises a reel 20 for storage and layout of a rigid walled pipeline, a pipeline laying device 24 adapted for being mounted adjacent the stern of a vessel downstream of the reel in the direction of unspooling, pipeline support means 26 incorporated in the laying device and adapted for providing simultaneous moving contact for the pipeline, a pipe take off structure 30 mounted in the laying device adapted for arcuate movement in spaced relationship about the periphery of the pipeline support means to permit adjustment of the water entry angle of the pipeline, pipeline handling means 32, 34 supported by the pipe take off structure and adapted for facilitating pipeline adjustments and connections and motive means operably interconnected to the reel and adapted to permit control of the rate of layout of the pipeline. The specification is also concerned with the construction of a straightening and tensioning device (32,34) and with a method of spooling a plurality of operational lines onto a vessel having a plurality of reels for the storage of operational lines only one of which is a rigid walled pipeline.
