ABG Shipyard launches pollution control vessel

The delayed three-ship Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) project for the Indian Coast Guard seems to have regained some forward momentum with the launch of the second PCV, ICGS Samudra Paharedar, at ABG's Surat shipyard on 27 March 2009. The project is unique in that this was the first time a private shipyard was awarded a contract to build large ships for the Indian Coast Guard. ABG is India's largest private sector shipyard.rnAt the time of contract announcement in late October 2004, steel had already been cut for the first ship a month earlier. The plan was to have the first vessel in service by 2006, although the first of class, ICGS Samudra Prahari, was not actually launched until 20 March 2007. At the time, it was expected that the ship would be ready for delivery after six months or so. This milestone was subsequently pushed out another year to September 2008.
