While both maritime and offshore sectors have eagerly heralded the fast-track implementation of a global bunkering infrastructure for natural gas, there is still a fair degree of uncertainty regarding the effects of accidental LNG release. According to Lloyds Registers (LR's) LNG Bunkering Infrastucture Study 2014, published earlier this year, a significant number of international ports remain upbeat about the possibility of establishing small scale LNG supply hubs. Surveying 22 ports, including Singapore, Piraeus, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Le Havre and New York, the study claims that 76% of respondents are optimistic that LNG bunkering operations will become a fixture at their facilities by 2020, with 59% confirming that plans are already underway to build these supply hubs. Sifting through the ports' replies, LR has concluded that LNG will account for 13% of all bunkers supplied within the next five years.
