Ro-ro order adds another dimension

As noted in the September news section of The Naval Architect, Stena Line has ordered two new ro-pax vessels valued at around SKr2 billion (US$310m) from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. The vessels will be put into service in 2011 and they are planned to operate the route Harwich to Rotterdam. Samsung Heavy Industries has previously built a number of shuttle tankers and ice-class tankers for Stena Bulk. The two, 11-deck new ro-pax vessels will be sisterships to Stena Trader and Stena Traveller, which went into service on the North Sea earlier this year. Classed by Lloyd's Register, the vessels will also be equipped with the latest energy management technology, making them as efficient as possible to run.
