During its sixty-second session the Marine Environmental Protection Committee of the IMO adopted a new chapter to MARPOL Annex Ⅵ that conveys a package of mandatory technical and operational measures aiming for to reduce GHG-emissions from international shipping. The instruments, which entered into force 01 January 2013, include the Energy Efficiency Design Index, EEDI, developed to improve the energy efficiency for new ships through enhanced design and propulsion performance. Due to difficulties to, based on statistical data, derive a robust reference line which can be considered as representing the average performance of the collective fleet data for some ship types, including ro-ro cargo ships and ro-ro passenger ships, these segments have been excluded from the first phase of implementation of the EEDI-requirements This paper is outlines the results of a systematic assessment on the establishment of EEDI-reference lines for ro-ro cargo and ro-ro passenger ships. Moreover, the paper details an EEDI-correction methodology as endorsed by MEPC 65 which aims for the establishment of normalised EEDI-conditions for these ship segments.
