Addressing a recent manning and training conference in Shanghai, Captain Pradeep Chawla, Directro Quality Assurance and Training at Anglo Eastern Ship Management, discussed the prospects for using Chinese seafarers and their need for improved training China has a long tradition of seafaring and some international companies had employed Chinese crews back in the 1970s and 80s but the main thrust started in 1998/1999 with China advising it had 'thousands' of well-trained surplus crew. At that time, the industry wanted a new source of crewing because the Philippines, Indonesia and some East European countries had not done so well in STCW 95 implementation.
