Local authorities are discovering the advantages of using recycling providers with a social and environmental approach which still win through the tendering process, says Anna Maris. The community waste sector is increasingly seen as an attractive proposition for local authorities looking to obtain best value for the public. At the same time the design of current waste contracts often excludes not-for-profit businesses from getting onto the tender list. The right contractual relationship will determine not only the provision of services, but it is also likely to result in higher participation rates and recycling rates.
