At Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif., the mission must be supported through any disruption in electric power. Additionally, Marines and civilians on base must be protected from intense heat in the desert environment that can reach up to 127°-F. Commissioning is a critical step in acceptance and implementation of any major system to ensure it meets the user and enterprise needs.In late March, Twentynine Palms performed initial testing of direct transition microgrid controls programming. The base installed SEL 2411 fast load shed controllers in order to provide a direct access control for load shedding. These controllers are being used along withbreaker status, voltage, and frequency trip points to identify a loss of power event.Previous testing occurred at night without photovoltaic. The testing that directly opened the breakers manually transitioned well, but when power was cut to the base from Southern California Edison, it was found that the time lag from reactions on the breakers did not trip fast enough. This caused a trip on the turbines form under frequency.
