NAVFAC EXWC recently hosted the second phase of the first Microgrid Academy at Port Hueneme, Calif. The three-day session was attended by representatives from Naval Base Ventura County, Naval Sea Systems Command, and the U.S. Army's 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power). The objectives of the seminar were to use XENDEE to simulate example scenarios for configurations by utilizing renewableenergy, energy storage, and microgrid technology to improve resilience and reduce energy costs. The class also was ableto get hands-on training at the Microgrid Testbed to understand how microgrids operate in real-world applications.Students were asked to use XENDEE to model Naval Station Rota and San Nicolas Island configurations for the best possible energy system configuration. They also learned how to run and operate the battery energy storage systems units. This was accomplished by simulating all activities using the controls and fully touring the two batteries. Instruction covered the operational and maintenance requirements to keep the battery energy storage systems healthy and running safely.
