In December, President Donald Trump signed legislation into law creating the first new armed service since 1947—the U.S. Space Force. The president signed the National Defense Authorization Act during a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Md. The $738 billion FY2020 authorization includes a provision to create the service that will be focused on organizing, training, and equipping the Space Force. Gen. John "Jay" Raymond, USAF, Commander of U.S. Space Command, will direct the effort. The president named Raymond the Chief of Space Operations; and the general also will be a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Space Command, a combatant command, will not go away but instead become the warfighting arm in space for the Department of Defense (DOD). The Space Force, like the services in other domains, will be responsible for organizing, training, and equipping the mission. Some Air Force bases will be renamed to reflect the new missions of the Space Force.
