In April 2007, an agreement was made by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Lockheed Martin Corp. to produce an autonomous mooring buoy for scientific and military missions. The buoy will be produced at Lockheed Martin's Marion, Mass., facility. FAU and the Naval Sea Systems Command have filed a joint patent application for the design funded by the Office of Naval Research, managed by Tom Swean, Ph.D. The system consists of an anchor, anchor/airbrake and flotation buoy. The buoy can be deployed from an aircraft, submarine, or surface vessel, with possible missions being submarine detection, meteorological and oceanographic measurements, autonomous underwater vehicle communication and underwater navigational aid.
