Despite promising proclamations of peace and tranquility, the nearly 20 years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union have been marred by conflict that has drawn the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) into numerous military operations. Regional conflicts and the ongoing war on terror in the Middle East, Central Asia and elsewhere have threatened the economic, political and national security interests of the U.S. and its European allies. The need for a robust and effective NATO is as important today as ever.
