Fort Campbell Plans First Zero-energy Homes In Army

In fall 2010, Fort Campbell, Ky., will become the first U.S. Army installation to have zero-energy houses. With the help of $500,000 donated by Fort Campbell Family Housing, Actus Lend Lease, the managing partner for the installation's privatized housing, is working with green-building architects and environmental building planners to revise a current four-bedroom duplex floor plan to be an energy-free abode. Two baseline zero-energy homes will be the centerpiece of a redevelopment initiative that is bringing 521 new homes to Fort Campbell's Woodlands Community. A zero-energy house is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis, and produces enough energy to offset the amount purchased from the utility, resulting in a net-zero annual energy bill. The homes will incorporate climate-specific design elements, passive solar heating and cooling and energy-efficient construction.
