The command headquarters at Kandahar Airfield, more commonly referred to as "KAF," home of the world famous "poo-pond," a lagoon of sewage and waste, was the New York City of a combat zone: a city that never slept. The constant buzz of aircraft, traffic, and movement made for a lively place to work. KAF was remarkably international with a French bistro, an Italian pizzeria, a TGI Fridays, souvenir stands, and jewelry stores located along "the Boardwalk."
