The following is not supposed to be a check list which you should follow if you wish your Company Council to run a strike ballot. It is merely a collection of reflections and thoughts on a process which takes far more energy and enthusiasm than you would ever expect it to. In April this year my company decided to impose a pay rise on the pilot work force. This was despite an agreement reached in 2004 which specifically stated that negotiations would take place for pay 2006. The imposition without negotiation applied to all pilots in bmi mainline, bmi baby, and bmi regional. It also applied to all other group employees. This one act could be described as the proverbial 'red rag to a bull' as it is an attempt to bypass due industrial process. It led to all of the events which unfolded over the following months.
