Lettice Curtis, one of the Air Transport Auxiliary's (ATA) finest pilots, entitled her World War II memoirs, The Forgotten Pilots. The ATA was a civilian outfit that took experienced pilots who were unable to fly in com bat-which included one-eyed, one-armed veterans and also included women. Male pilots may have referred to women aviators as 'the beauty chorus', but these women were highly skilled, and brave. The 166 girls flew everything from Spitfires to huge bombers,ferrying them to the fighter stations across war-torn Britain. Theirs was one of the most dangerous jobs of the war-theyflew without arms or radios, but few people know about them now.
