You may be asking why I chose LED Technology as the subject for my research. The main reason was that, if you believe everything you read in the industry journals, light emitting diodes are the key light source of the future. I, like many other 'lighters', come from an electrical and not electronic background. Therefore, I immediately had a vast number of questions about how this 'new' technology works, as well as the associated electronic jargon that is widely used with it, but is perhaps little understood. I am certain that there are many other people in the lighting industry who feel the same as I do and possibly have the same questions. The other major influence on my choice was that the industry in general seems to be absolutely obsessed by LEDs. Many specifiers I talk to, in my day-to-day activity, have either used or want to use them on a wide variety of projects. I can imagine a similar industry response when Thorn introduced the fluorescent tube packaged with the batten luminaire. Issues such as life expectancy and output, in relation to energy consumed, were just as relevant then as they are now with LEDs. I hope that other people in our industry, curious about LEDs, will use this document to help answer some of the questions they might have about the technology. If the document initiates further discussion on the subject in the future, so much the better.
