In December and January, like many in the lighting industry, I read with concern various reports in the national press where lighting was highlighted as a significant issue - or a possible contributory factor (see In Brief for fuller report). Firstly there was the tragic loss.of three cyclists from the same family on an unlit road just prior to Christmas. It is impossible to know if lighting would have made any difference in this specific case, but it is well-established that on average lighting reduces night- time accidents by 30%.
