Technology, population, scarce resources and the future of humanity

摘要

In choosing a topic for this President's Page, I was tempted to talk about the resurgence of the industry that was so evident at the upbeat Annual Meeting in Denver. I also considered discussing how important we geophysi-cists have become now that engineers have learned to appreciate seismic data. It would have been fun to single out a particular topic, like shear wave recording or time-lapse seismic, and show how it can impact our industry's future. Instead I hope to raise a longer-term issue that I believe will be important to our industry, to our future, and to our children's future as well.
