Obstetricians in charge of a maternity unit for low risk term deliveries are faced with several typical problems that need to be solved in order to avoid compromised quality of care. Staffing has to be sufficient (structure quality) standard operating procedures need to be implemented to ascertain state-of-the-art care even in the absence of senior obstetricians in the labor ward (process quality) and the satisfaction of new parents has to be communicated to parents-to-be. We describe our approach to these problems, exemplified by the “Emmendingen traffic lights” for the management of vaginal deliveries.
