The Role of Risk

A coalition of companies that manufacture and use a chemical undergoing an EPA risk assessment pooled their resources to fund a study to address a scientific issue critical to understanding the risks posed. The coalition considered various ways to engage in the assessment process but ultimately decided to focus on funding of needed research. The specific research was determined after thoughtful discussion moderated and assisted by an external party. The study was conducted by an institution that had complete autonomy during the process. As part of the contractual agreement, the research was published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
