A DIOXIN INVENTORY FOR IRELAND

Ireland has a serious, many would say, critical waste management problem. In this article Dermot Malone, BE, PhD, Ceng, FIEI, FIChemE and Helena Barrett. BE, Department of Chemical Engineering UCD, report on results for a preliminary investigation, which set out to improve the dioxin emission inventory estimates for Ireland. We produce an ever-growing mountain of waste, most of which is consigned to landfill sites. Local Authorities are in the process of introducing plans to deal with the present difficulties. Many of the Waste Management Plans include incineration as an integral part of their overall strategy. Incineration can bring about significant reductions in waste volumes and the heat released by the high temperature thermal oxidation reactions can be recovered and used for electricity generation or district heating schemes.
