Michael O'Sullivan of Marine Computation Services, Galway, describes a pre-engineering design study carried out to explore the use of titanium as novel material of construction for a gas export riser for use in the Asgard field. The Asgard field, operated by Statoil, lies on the Haltenbank in the Norwegian Sea, about 200km from mid-Norway. The field comprises the Midgard, Smorbukk and Smorbukk South deposits, and water depths are roughly 240 to 300m. The development consists of Asgard A, a production ship for oil and condensate; Asgard B, the worlds largest semi-submersible floating production system, with process plants for the treatment of gas and the stabilisation of oil and condensate; and Asgard C, a storage ship. At full capacity, the field will produce 12 billion m~3 of gas per year, as well as 200,000 barrels of oil and 94,000 barrels of condensate per day.
