Even with cutbacks, tenders for public sector goods, supplies and services will be worth around €18 billion this year. For many companies these government contacts are a new source of potential work as securing private sector business becomes much more difficult. Another major attraction is that the public sector generally pays bills on time.rnThe more dynamic entrepreneurs are looking overseas for new export opportunities: the EU's public procurement market is valued at a staggering €1,500 billion and UK contracts worth some €150 billion annually. For companies with long experience in submitting tenders, government contacts have been a profitable source of business. In recent times however, as the recession bites, and as more companies are bidding for work, prices are now very competitive and the standard and quality of bids is increasing.
