M7 Heath Mayfield completed through design and build

The M7 Heath Mayfield Motorway is the first large NRA scheme completed through a design and build contract. The Project Engineers' Representative, John Norbury of Amp, describes the partnership approach contributed to the efficient and timely progression of the project. The new Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen T.D., will open the M7 Heath Mayfield Motorway on November 8, 2004.The motorway will fill the 1 7.5km gap between the Portlaoise Bypass, completed in May 1997 and the Kildare Town Bypass, opened last December (The Engineers' Journal Vol 58:01). When the N7 Naas Road widening, for which the contract has recently been awarded, is completed, there will be almost 80 km of grade-separated dual carriageway from Clonkeen, south west of Portlaoise to Newland's Cross on the outskirts of Dublin. The Public Inquiry for the M7 Portlaoise to Castletown - M8 Portlaoise to Cullahill Motorway, located to the southwest from Portlaoise, which includes the junctions between the M7 Limerick and M8 Cork motorways, was held this summer.
