The pipeline ― commonly known as the Gas Pipeline to the West ― is the longest built in Europe this year and also the longest ever likely to be constructed in Ireland. Along its length, the pipeline crosses 286 roads, including 14 proposed motorway routes where additional depth was required. It also traverses 156 rivers, including the Shannon at Athlone and again at Foynes, 16 railway lines and the Royal Canal. "We were involved with Bord Gais Eireann on this project from the very start from the 2005 Gas report, commissioned in 1997, which assessed how best to meet the country's gas requirements into the 21st century," explained PJ Rudden, project director of consulting engineers, MC O'Sullivan & Co.
