David Gardner has the task of commercially exploiting research from Cranfield College of Aeronautics, as the newly appointed managing director of its commercial arm, Cranfield Aerospace. Set up in 1989 as Cranfield Aeronautical Research, the firm is now part of CITH, the holding company for Cranfield University's commercial assets. But with 70 staff and annual sales of $6m, the aerospace company operates as an independent commercial entity.
