The present invention provides a formulation particularly suitable for the treatment or prevention of cognitive impairment states or behavioral disorders, especially in the elderly, which allows a synergistic metabolic activity through to the administration of the hydro-ethanolic extract of the seaweed Hypline johnstonii. In a concentration range of up 50 ?g/mL to 400 ?g/mL of the Hypnea johnstonii hydroethanolic extract, a decrease in acetylcholinesterase activity of up 0% to 100% is obtained. Such results convert this invention into one utilizable for the control and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, as well as for similar cognitive disorders also characterized by a cholinergic deficiency in the human brain.
