New york city will remember the long, hot night of 14 August for many years to come. That was the night of the great blackout that swept across the midwest, eastern Canada and New York State. As the US-Canada Task Force charged with investigating the blackout started to organise itself, the question of whether or not such a blackout could happen in the UK was being asked on this side of the Atlantic.
