In his letter regarding the online story 'Heating costs' (Letters, 7 September), PH Field pours cold water on the idea of using solar power to raise steam to power electrical generators and suggests that it is morally dubious.rnI wonder what would please him? The Gemasolar power plant in Spain, which concentrates the sun in a different way from the one PH Field describes and uses salts to store the solar energy for use during the hours of darkness, manages an average power of 12.6MW in an area of 140Ha, yielding an average power density of 9W per m~2, and a peak daytime power that is higher still.
