From the latest fighter jets to the largest civil airliners the performance of today's aircraft is nothing short of astounding. But the mechanics of modern flight are horrendously complicated: relying on a dizzying range of control surfaces -flaps, ailerons, and rudders - to keep an aircraft safely aloft. Against this backdrop, engineers are increasingly excited by the potential of technology that could do away with control surfaces altogether.
