Controversial lead works receives IPPC permit

Tough measures to protect air quality have been set by the Environment Agency in an integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) permit for a new lead melting works in Yorkshire. The application aroused considerable public concern, though the new installation is intended to replace a more polluting works nearby. Exposure to lead has declined significantly since the 1980s following the phase-out of its use in petrol. The metal has a wide range of toxic effects, but concern has focused on its damaging effect on the central nervous system of children, even at low levels.
