Perfluorinated chemicals, widely used in applications as diverse as non-stick coatings, lubricants, surfactants and polymers, have been found to be widespread in human tissues and the environment. In a surprise move, the UK Government has announced unilateral action to phase out perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS). But growing pressure on PFOS and its relatives has led to substitution with other perfluorinated chemicals, even though the health and environmental properties of most products on the market have yet to be fully evaluated. The compounds would make a challenging test for the EU's proposed REACH regime - but scientific uncertainties are a formidable obstacle for regulators.
