Hostility to nuclear power runs deep within the environmental community, and for good reasons. The industry was built on a starry-eyed post-war dream - electricity too cheap to meter - and its history is one of secrecy and financial incompetence coupled with a scandalous failure to plan for the long term. Investment decisions taken 30-40 years ago have saddled taxpayers with huge long-term costs. It is surely good news, therefore, that the government has resisted the temptation to offer subsidies or privileged market access for nuclear generators in its review of energy policy (see PP 37-38). New nuclear stations are to be developed and operated by the private sector which would also meet full decommissioning and long-term waste costs.
