It will take some time to weigh up the implications of Tesco's bold decision to label all its products to show their carbon footprint. "Clear information about the carbon cost of the products we buy will enable customers to make effective green choices," said Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy on 18 January. Tesco has yet to develop the labelling scheme, and Sir Terry was careful not to set a deadline for its implementation. But, ambitiously, he said the labels will reflect a product's "complete lifecycle, from production, through distribution to consumption."
