Eco-towns shortlist and guidance revealed

The much anticipated shortlist for the government's eco-town initiative has been published. But the government has lessons to learn from its last attempt to create green communities a decade ago. Fifteen locations have been shortlisted to become eco-towns, the government announced in April.1 None of the homes proposed in these new settlements will be built on greenbelt land, though three bids are based on undeveloped greenfield land. Six would be sited entirely on previously developed 'brownfield' land such as old Ministry of Defence (MoD) sites, disused airfields and closed coal pits. Four will use a mixture of land types.
