UK'S LARGEST BIOMASS CHP SCHEME GETS GO-AHEAD

The UK's largest biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant is to be built in Grangemouth after receiving consent from the Scottish government on 3 June. Forth Energy, a joint venture between Forth Ports and Scottish & Southern Energy, is to build the £485m plant by 2017. It will produce 120 megawatts of electricity and 200MW of heat. The main heat user will be Ineos' nearby refinery, but council offices and homes could also be supplied. The plant will use about 1.3 million tonnes of wood a year. Most of this will be imported.
